Pharmacy OneSource - Speed Saves Lives: Leveraging a Massively Parallel Expert System for Patient Surveillance

Nathan Bell, Principal Architect at Pharmacy OneSource, presented this case study at two major events this year - Rules Fest 2011 and Business Rules Forum 2011- on the topic Speed Saves Lives: Leveraging a Massively Parallel Expert System for Patient Surveillance, where he discussed the benefits gained from the GigaSpaces integration with Pharmacy OneSource.

This case study discusses the steps taken to develop a next-generation patient surveillance platform that allows clinicians toaccurately detect risk factors, and perform interventions. The platform leverages the GigaSpaces implementation of Tuple-space and the Drools rule engine to create a massively parallel expert system.

For iPhone Launch, Razorfish Uses An Elastic Application Platform

Date: March 19, 2010

The breakneck adoption of the Apple iPhone posed big challenges for Razorfish, the firm that developed the iPhone activation application for the UK. To support the activation of 12,000 iPhones per hour, Razorfish needed an application platform that delivered performance, scalability, reliability, and quick development. Razorfish chose GigaSpaces eXtreme Application Platform (XAP) for the job. Application development professionals can learn from Razorfish's experience as an example of how to use elastic application platforms such as GigaSpaces XAP to develop and deploy mission-critical, high-volume transactional applications.

UK Mobile Operator - Cloud-Based SIM Activation

Date: December 11, 2009

Razorfish, a GigaSpaces partner,  used XAP to develop a SIM activation application for a leading UK mobile operator, running entirely in the public cloud. Razorfish report cost savings of more than 87% - the cloud-based solution costs $43K p.a. (slide 14), while just the hardware for an on-premise solution would cost $320K, without the cost of operations staff (slide 15).

Web 2.0 Trading Platform Running On and Off the Cloud

Date: December 11, 2009

Orbyte - A GigaSpaces Cloud Client, describes its web 2.0 trading platform. Using XAP, the same application runs both on-premises and on the cloud, with the same extreme performance and high resilience. Orbyte list XAP's benefits for startups: "an infrastructure we couldn't afford otherwise", cost control, agile provisioning, and a competitive edge (slide 11).

Fortune 100 CRM Solution on a Private Cloud

Date: December 10, 2009

British American Tobacco, a GigaSpaces customer, is using XAP to develop a mobile CRM system, delivered as SaaS on a private cloud. The solution handles 4 million sales visits per week by 10,000 sales reps, with a data volume of 752 GB (slide 9). All the alternatives to GigaSpaces forced lock-in to proprietary development platforms and were "not really built for our data volumes" (slide 6).

Amazon Start-up Event by Cédric Roll from ORbyte Solutions

GigaSpaces cloud client, Orbyte Solutions, presented their "Trading in the Clouds" solution at the Amazon Web Service Startup event in the UK.

British American Tobacco

When BAT tried to replace its monolithic field order management system with one based on a three-tier relational model, it found the costs prohibitive. So the company switched to grid computing utilizing the GigaSpaces platform. Now 15 entry-level servers do the same work as the much larger computers they replaced – for the same capital investment – but twelve times faster!

British American Tobacco is the world’s second largest quoted tobacco group. With more than 300 brands in the portfolio, BAT makes the cigarette chosen by one in seven of the world’s one billion adult smokers. BAT has leadership in more than 50 of the 180 markets where it does business. The Group has 81 cigarette factories in 64 countries and employs more than 90,000 people worldwide.

Building an SOA Framework for the Digital Future

This customer presentation was presented by Avenue A Razorfish at the GigaSpaces Annual User Forum Event, which took place in London on September 22, 2008.

This presentation concentrates on the use of GigaSpaces as an SOA backbone for a global mobile Telecommunications company, in which the ability to scale out on demand coupled with guaranteed failover and redundancy were core requirements. It also covers integration touchpoints which include MQ Series and several credit checking and Payment Gateway services.

Rednano

A premier local and directory search engine

Patrick Ng, CTO from Rednano , a premier local and directory search engine and a GigaSpaces customer. He shared with the audience the business of a search engine, their technology platform and challenges, and why he would be interested to run in a local cloud operator. On his last slide Patrick also gave the reasons why he chose GigaSpaces, including the fact that it is a stable and proven product which is ahead of the pack, and he mentioned that it took them only 2 days to migrate some of their components to run on the GigaSpaces cluster.

Virgin Mobile UK

Answering the Call of Growing Demand with a Space-Based Service-Oriented Architecture

Since its launch in 1999, Virgin Mobile UK has attracted more than four million customers and established itself as the leading mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) in the United Kingdom. When Virgin Mobile UK faced the welcome challenge of skyrocketing growth, it quickly learned the hard way that a traditional server-based architecture that relied on tight coupling of services could not help them meet it. During critical sales periods, such as the run up to Christmas, even short system outages could prove costly and potentially tarnish the company's great reputation for customer service. As part of a corporate strategy to grow its online capability, the company sought a new solution that would provide both the scalability to accommodate rapid, unpredictable changes in demand and the fault tolerance required to maintain continuous availability.

Today, the new system, powered by the underlying GigaSpaces scale-out application server, has proven resiliency and dynamically scalable Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), despite the failure of some legacy components, and even when core direct sales increased by more than 300 percent.

A Top-Tier US-Based Bank

When it comes to financial service investments and their high-performance computing (HPC) platforms, speed is king. Analyze larger volumes of data faster and with greater subtlety, you can make smarter, faster trade and credit decisions, reduce investment and operational risk, and improve profitability. A top-tier, US-based bank had adopted grid computing to scale its HPC resources. Now, it wanted to optimize application performance on the grid and use its grid resources for new classes of computing challenges, including transaction processing, databases and applications where memory latency and data persistence are crucial. It turned to Intel, IBM and GigaSpaces Technologies to prove the scalability of an innovative solution that would take its grid to the next level.

Primatics Financial

Primatics Financial provides a high-performance risk management platform, used primarily for analysis of mortgage portfolios. Primatics uses XAP to power high-speed Monte Carlo computations on financial portfolios for very large volumes of data, with linear scalability as data volumes and number of calculations increase. Primatics also used GigaSpaces XAP to SaaS-enable their platform, which now runs seamlessly on the Amazon EC2 cloud. Primatics’ Argyn Kuketayev shared the lessons learned from their SaaS-enablement project in his JavaOne presentation: “You need to make sure you use the right tools … You don't want to have to worry about provisioning and reliability. Make sure you have provisioning, failover, monitoring and SLA out of the box.”
